Firefighters in Southern California battle brush fire

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Los Angeles County firefighters battled a brush fire in Santa Clarita Wednesday as triple-digit temperatures gripped Southern California.

The Pointe Fire was first reported at about 1:45 p.m. It burned nearly 52 acres before fire officials said forward progress was stopped about two-and-a-half hours later.

Firefighters issued an evacuation warning for nearby neighborhoods.

"I mean it all happened so quick. We didn't even see it coming. I walked outside. That whole mountain was on fire...that whole hill," said Chris Landgren, a Santa Clarita resident. "I grabbed the dogs. Got out...grabbed the important you know irreplaceable things."

Landgren also added, "You come out here...it being this hot and have a big ol' fire right there. I mean...it was scorching in this neighborhood. Smoke was coming down the street. Couldn't see anything...ash everywhere. It was hectic getting everyone out."

As of Thursday, the Pointe Fire has been 32% contained.
