One dead following crash and shooting near March Air Reserve Base in California

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - A driver with what appeared to be a gunshot wound died Tuesday after a two-vehicle crash near March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, California.

According to the base, the victim has been identified as an American Forces Network employee.

Authorities say the government television and radio broadcast service employee was driving to work around 8 a.m. when the crash happened involving a sedan and an SUV. The location is not on the base which is about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Deputies were initially dispatched to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

Both drivers were hospitalized in critical condition, but one later died with "injuries consistent with a gunshot wound," according to the sheriff's department.

There is no word on what led up to the the shooting, and an investigation is underway.
