Trial set for man accused of igniting the Palisades Fire

NBC

(CNN, KYMA) - In California, the trial against a man accused of setting the deadly Palisades Fire starts Monday.

Last year's historically-destructive blaze claimed the lives of a dozen people and scorched thousands of homes and businesses.

Federal prosecutors say Jonathan Rinderknecht was obsessed with fire and is responsible.

Last month, federal prosecutors said Rinderknecht was "fixated" by Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson back in December of 2024.

An attorney for Rinderknecht said that many people will look at this case differently when the trial evidence reveals the facts.

If convicted, Rinderknecht faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 45 years in federal prison.

Jury selection is scheduled for Monday.
