Thousands attend Carnaval San Francisco Grand Parade

SAN FRANCISCO (NBC, KYMA) - Thousands of people filled the Mission District Sunday for the Carnaval San Francisco Grand Parade.

It's the culmination of the annual two-day multicultural celebration honoring the diverse traditions of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The mission district came alive Sunday for the 48th Annual Carnaval Parade. People lined up early for the best spots along the 20-block parade route.

Mia came in from Chico to the city by the bay.

"The vibes are immaculate. Everyone is so happy and cheering all the cars...we're all waiting for the dancers as well," Mia shared.

Organizers say the parade featured than 70 contingents and 5,000 artists, representing the heritage of countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Trinidad, Tobago, Puerto Rico and beyond.

"I'm a native. This is a tradition of the Latin culture here in San Francisco. We're all united as one," said Juanita, a San Francisco resident who says it's a can't miss celebration. "To celebrate the happiness that we have in our culture everyone is so diverse everyone loves to be here and represents themselves."

It's the culmination of Carnaval San Francisco's two-day celebration. This year's theme: La Copa del Pueblo, which means "The People's Cup" in English, in honor of the world cup coming to the Bay Area this summer.

"Everything is for the World Cup and soccer...everything," said one paradegoer.

Neighbors, friends and family sharing in community and culture.

"I'm very excited. My sisters are able to experience this that we love so much in the last few years," said Julissa, another San Francisco resident.
