Nick Reiner pleads not guilty in connection to parents’ deaths

UPDATE (11:20 AM): Nick Reiner, the son of late film director Rob Reiner, has entered a not guilty plea Monday.

Reiner, 32, appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom on charges of first-degree murder in the deaths of his father and his mother Michele Reiner.

The charges include a special circumstances allegation of multiple murders, and an additional allegation that Reiner used a knife in the killings, which took place sometime early Sunday morning on December 14.

On Monday, a judge entered a not guilty plea on Reiner's behalf.

Reiner, who appeared in court, agreed to the plea, acknowledging he understood the judge with a "yes."

Reiner also waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing during his court appearance, which has been scheduled for April 29.

Following the court appearance, L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman spoke with reporters, saying officials are still waiting on a coroner's report and prosecutors are considering the death penalty in the case.

"This case is a death penalty eligible case. Along those lines, we take the process in which we determine whether or not the death penalty should be sought extremely seriously, and it goes through a very rigorous process," Hochman shared.

(CNN, KYMA) - Nick Reiner, son of late film director Rob Reiner, is expected to appear in court Monday for a second arraignment hearing.

Reiner, 32, is accused of fatally stabbing his famous father and mother, Michele Singer Reiner, late last year in their Los Angeles.

He's been in custody since then.

Reiner could go to prison for life or face the death penalty, but prosecutors haven't said if they'll seek capital punishment.

He did not enter a plea at his initial arraignment because his former attorney, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case, and is now being represented by the L.A. County Public Defender's Office.
