Heavy snow snarls mountain traffic in Northern California

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Heavy snow snarled mountain traffic in Placer County, California Sunday.

Video filmed along interstate 80 shows some of the chaos caused by the winter weather.

The highway was very slow moving in both directions, and at times, parts of the interstate had to be shut down to the treacherous driving conditions and crashes along the road.

Several big rigs had to be towed out of the snow Sunday.

Dozens of Caltrans crews are working around the clock to try to keep the highway open, and well sanded to improve traction.

Of course, tire chains were required in the area, and more of the same is expected in the Sierras throughout Monday.
