Cleanup underway in California after powerful winds caused significant damage

PARADISE, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Cleanup is underway in Paradise, California where powerful winds caused significant damage on Christmas morning.

Massive trees came crashing down in the storm. One pine tree, 120-feet tall, fell and split a home down the middle.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, but residents, like Sherie Brown Spellings, say it was a storm they won't forget.

"And that was a very strong wind event so...that was pretty darn close. Yeah that was pretty darn close, we didn't use to have winds like this," Spellings shared.

The Town of Paradise has become more vulnerable to strong storms since the so-called Camp Fire in 2018.

The fire destroyed the dense canopy of old-growth trees that provided a natural wind buffer in the past.
