Semi-truck carrying Tesla vehicles catches fire, shuts down 5 Freeway in California

SYLMAR, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A semi-truck carrying Tesla vehicles caught on fire and shut down all lanes on 5 Freeway in Sylmar, California Saturday evening.

The big rig and its cargo caught fire on the southbound 5 Freeway around 5:30 p.m.

The fire shut down all car and truck lanes after the California Highway Patrol issued a Sigalert.

Seven Tesla vehicles and the truck hauling them caught on fire. At least four vehicles were engulfed in flames when the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) arrived on scene.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.

The electric batteries in the Tesla cars made it difficult for fire crews to put out the flames.

LAFD said no one was injured in the fire.
