Federal agents open fire at family’s vehicle during vehicle stop in California
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - There are two different accounts of what led to masked federal agents opening fire at a San Bernardino family's vehicle after it was stopped in California.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Customs and Border Protection agents attempted to stop the vehicle during a "targeted enforcement operation."
In the video, members of the family asking agents for identification, and moments later, agents shattered the car's windows and the driver of the truck sped off. There were also three loud pops as they drove away.
The DHS confirmed the sound heard in the video were gunshots, and the San Bernardino Police Department also confirmed the shooting.
The family says the masked men did not show identification nor did they provide judicial warrants.
DHS officials said the agents had to shoot the vehicle in self-defense because the driver tried to "run [the agents] down," but did not say if they had those warrants.
Cellphone footage also did not show what lead up to the altercation.
