Movie rental store in California still open for business
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Video stores have all but vanished in the age of streaming, but one popular movie rental shop in California is still standing.
Colin Hutton opened "Video Wave" in San Francisco back in 1983, stocking the shelves with over 20,000 movies and television shows on DVD and even VHS.
In recent years, the store's become quite popular among the Gen Z crowd.
Many of those customers say they appreciate the browsing experience, selecting their choices by hand, and even watching the coming attractions.
"When it comes to things are steaming on your phone it feels like everything's demanding your attention right away and these other things are like a step removed from that," said Kailxn Xephyr, a customer.
"If I had 150 more subscribers, that would be the difference between not making it and making it," Hutton expressed.
"Video Wave" generates just enough income to stay afloat through a subscription model of just $8 a month.
Hutton says the store currently has about 556 subscribers.
