Gifford Fire in California burns 12,400 acres

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - The Gifford Fire continues to burn in California Saturday morning.

The blaze, which is made up of a series of fires, broke out Friday afternoon on Highway 166 east of Santa Maria.

As of Saturday morning, the Gifford Fire had burned an estimated 12,400 acres and was only 5% contained, according to Cal Fire.

The blaze is burning mostly within the Los Padres National Forest, and evacuation orders remain in place for the area.
