Madre Fire in California burns nearly 80,000 acres
SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A California wildfire continues to rage out of control and has now burned 79,630 acres, according to Cal Fire.
Authorities say the hot weather and high winds are fueling the madre fire in San Luis Obispo County.
Firefighters are using water tanks on the ground and are also fighting the fire from the air.
The fire, which started Wednesday after 1:00 p.m. Pacific, is about 10% contained, with officials saying it is the largest wildfire to burn in California this year.
Roadways in the area remain closed and evacuation orders remain in effect for residents due to poor air quality.
Authorities have warned residents to remain inside if they begin to see ash or smoke which can be especially harmful to young children, older adults, and anyone with a vulnerable condition.
