Families in Southern California hit the L.A. County Fair amid hot weather
POMONA, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Southern California is sweltering in summer-like temperatures, but it isn't keeping families away from the L.A. County Fair.
Thousands of families are kicking off the weekend at the L.A. County Fair, but that fun will come with a sizzle as temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s in Pomona, and even triple digits in parts of the Inland Empire.
"It's really hot. I don't know if it's humid but we are sweating and sticky. It's not the best," said Bobbie Willis, a Hesperia resident.
Willis and her family came to fair to catch a break from the heat, but Mother Nature had other plans.
"It's a lot hotter than we anticipated," Willis expressed.
Most of the kids didn't mind the hot weather on Friday because they were too busy having fun while mothers like Charmene Cook from Riverside did their best to keep their hands from touching anything on the rides exposed to the sun.
"My son [Michael] did get burned. I didn't tell him and he burned his hand," Cook shared.
A small delay that six-year-old Michael says he brushed away when he found his favorite activity at the fair: "I saw the pigs and the cows...goats and chickens."
The CDC says the heat can be dangerous. Experts say watch for signs of dizziness, muscle cramping and heavy sweating.
Drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade and if necessary, seek medical attention.
"Lots of shade and umbrellas. We have bottle water refill stations in all buildings which are air conditioned," said Nana Hernández with the L.A. County Fair.
As the temperature rises remember ,there are plenty of options to stay cool and the Willis family knows just how to do it.
"We are going for the frozen lemonade and anything cold is what we are going for right now," Willis remarked.
