Southern California experiences 5.2 magnitude earthquake

EL CAJON, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Southern California is feeling the effects of a preliminary 5.2 magnitude earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck near Julian, California Monday morning, and was felt across San Diego County.

USGS is also reporting seven small aftershocks.

Seismologists say that while the shaking can be scary, and this kind of event rarely does serious damage in the quake hardened region.

"Intensity six to seven is usually what you see on top of a five, and i'm going to qualify that right now, but given that it's thirteen kilometers away from everybody, because it's thirteen kilometers deep, probably maybe intensity six would be the what we would have seen right on top of it that will throw objects off of shelves but really won't be doing any damage to a normal California Building."

Monday's earthquake follows a 3.5-magnitude temblor in the same area on Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service said a tsunami is not expected.
