Venezuelan man detained by ICE while attempting update his address

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A Venezuelan man who went to Sacramento's immigration offices to change his address was detained by ICE.

24-year-old Wilfredo Rivero is in the U.S. legally with a pending asylum case and has no criminal record.

He and his fiancee, Victoria Colmenero, drove from Siskiyou County to the California State Capitol to do a change of address.

"Since he was able to establish himself here in California, he wanted to change his direction in California to see if they could make a court closer to home," Colmenero shared.

However, Rivero was detained during the appointment.

An ICE Online Detainee Locator System, on Friday, showed that he was being held at a facility near Bakersfield.

The agency has not said why Rivero is being detained or the status of his immigration case.

"It's just a stressful situation because I know he's a good person and he doesn't have any criminal criminal records," Colmenero expressed.

His next court date for his asylum case was scheduled for July 2027.
