Ski enthusiasts celebrate “Miracle March” in the Sierra Mountains

NORDEN, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - As snow continues to pile up across the Sierra, ski enthusiasts are celebrating what has been dubbed "Miracle March."

With fresh powder blanketing the slopes, skiers and snowboarders rushed to Sugar Bowl Resort Friday to take advantage of the winter wonderland.

Skier and snow boarders flocking to Sugar Bowl Resort to get a taste of the fresh powder.

"I think it's floaty. So you just kind of like, float and, like, you don't really care if you if you're gonna fall. Like, you just fall and poof, you're in powder, you know?" said Molly Francis, a Sugar Bowl visitor.

"When you're in the soft snow, it's like it's the closest thing to flying without being in the air," said John Herschleb, another Sugar Bowl visitor.

Despite the constant snow fall and windy conditions, chain controls on Interstate 80 (I-80) for much of the day multiple spin outs and difficult driving conditions.

"If you're a local, it's awesome, which we are. So we played hooky for work...to come ski. If you're from the Valley, it's going to be a lot harder to get out of here," said Jessica Menasco, another Sugar Bowl visitor.

"We had it planned and we were going to come and be really early today, but we ran into about an hour and a half of traffic from Colfax," Herschleb shared.

"You have to have good tires, you have to have four wheel drive. Like all those things are super important," said another Sugar Bowl visitor.

Conditions are expected to improve over the weekend.

"It looks like there's going to be a little lull in the storm on Saturday and Sunday. So that'll be a great opportunity to come up and enjoy the snow, play around before things turn back on on Monday," said Maggie Eshbaugh, a representative of the resort.

"We're coming back [Saturday] and hopefully Sunday," Herschleb remarked.

Sugar Bowl reported over three feet of snow over the last few days.

"Obviously, a system like this is just putting us in this beautiful, beautiful spring lineup," Eshbaugh expressed.

Eshbaugh also said this: "We actually are going to extend our season a little bit until the end of April. So, yeah, we're we're looking at a lot more ski days."
