Parole board hearing for Menendez brothers set for June
(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - California Governor Gavin Newsom said Erik and Lyle Menendez will have a parole board hearing in June as they continue to seek several legal pathways to secure their freedom.
During a podcast Tuesday, Governor Newsom announced the news saying the independent risk assessment, a group of experts and psychologists, will look at whether the brothers pose any danger to the public.
When a report is ready, the governor's office will submit it to a judge to consider for possible resentencing.
At the same time, the governor's office will conduct its own independent analysis to determine whether to support commutation for the brothers.
The brothers were convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents and sentenced to life without parole. However, a resentencing could make them eligible for parole, or the governor could decide to commute their sentences.
