One person in critical condition following car driving over a cliff

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - One person is critically injured after their car went over a cliff in the California Bay Area.

Cal Fire says the crash happened Friday afternoon off Highway One in Santa Cruz County. They estimate the car plunged 300 feet down the cliff, to land on the beach below.

There was only one person inside the car, Cal Fire said. They were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

It's not yet clear what caused the vehicle to go off the cliff, but an investigation is ongoing.
