Officials said occupants were two vehicles were shooting at each other at the time when the child, who was in separate, unrelated vehicle, was struck by gunfire.

The eight-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital in grave condition.

I think anyone can relate that has children. When a child is struck by gunfire or a violent crime occurs, it touches you," said Lt. Slade Durham of the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

CHP said preliminary information revealed that the two vehicles continued eastbound and one or both of the vehicles may have exited the freeway.

No suspects have been identified at this time and an investigation in ongoing.
