Missing 14-year-old California girl found at Camp Pendleton
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A U.S. Marine has been detained for questioning in California after a missing, underage girl was found inside the barracks at Camp Pendleton.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDCSD) said the 14-year-old girl, who has learning disabilities, was located June 28, about two weeks after her grandmother reported that she had run away from her home.
It's not clear how she came to be inside one of the barracks on the base.
A spokesman at Camp Pendleton would only confirm in a statement that on June 28, "a Marine with Combat Logistics Battalion 5 (CLB-5), 1st Marine Logistics Group was taken into custody for questioning by Naval Criminal Investigative Services."
The unidentified Marine is still in custody, but he has not been charged.
The SDCSD and the Human Trafficking Task Force are assisting the Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) in their investigation into the matter.
Authorities say the girl was returned to her grandmother.
