California community outraged to find hate-filled messages

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Sacramento-area residents are waking up to find hate-filled messages in their neighborhood.

Law enforcement say they have their hands full trying to find out who may have done it.

Driving around east sacramento, it’s not uncommon to see flags supporting inclusion. But someone despised the idea so much, they let it be known.

"Especially in California. I mean, it’s supposed to be so inclusive and diverse. I just can’t even believe it," said Kathy Keys, an Elmhurst resident.

Arden-Arcade

Keys claims someone littered their neighborhood with Nazi propaganda Sunday night.

On it, the writer claims diversity means fewer white people, inclusion means exclusion of white people, and equity means stealing from white people.

In Arden-Arcade on Sunday, a similar story.

"There were several homes left with some anti-Semitic and anti-gay fliers at several homes," said Sgt. Amar Gandhi of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office (SCSO).

Another case

Not even 12 hours later, about two miles away from where deputies first responded, bias-based crime detectives received another case.

Sacramento police tells us people found fliers in the river park neighborhood, believing other communities are affected.

It’s not clear if any of the cases are related. What is clear, however, comes from the youngest of minds.

"I feel like everyone should be included," said Juniper, another Elmhurst resident.

No room for hate

To city hall, there’s no room for hate.

In a statement, the mayor said it’s no coincidence the fliers arrived ahead of Juneteenth. Also, "Sacramento will never cower in the face of antisemitism, racism, or prejudice."

Last month, the state launched the CA vs Hate, a hotline to report hate acts. So far, its received 180 reports statewide, 10 were filed in Sacramento County.

While there are multiple ongoing investigations, there could be a chance whoever is behind this won’t face charges for distrusting the fliers. Hate speech is still considered free speech.
