SAG-AFTRA actors vote to authorize strike

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Actors could be the next members of the Hollywood system to go on strike.

Union actors, represented by SAG-AFTRA, voted Monday to authorize a strike if they don't agree on a new contract with major studios, streamers, and production companies by June 30.

The strike authorization was approved by an overwhelming margin. Nearly 98% of the 65,000 members who cast votes approved the measure.

Negotiations between the Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) get underway Qednesday.

At stake is increased base compensation, the threat of artificial intelligence, and benefit plans.

The strike vote comes over a month after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) began striking over its own dispute with the Producers Union.
