RCSO gives update on deputy fatally shot during domestic dispute
RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A sheriff's deputy who was shot in California's Riverside County on Friday has died.
Officials said 30-year-old Deputy Darnell Calhoun was the first deputy at the scene in response to a domestic violence and child custody call at a home in Lakeland Village.
During a press conference, the Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said the circumstance surrounding the initial contact were "unclear."
"At this point, we are not completely sure of the circumstances surrounding the initial contact."
A press release said a suspect began shooting at Deputy Calhoun as he approached the residence.
Officials said a second deputy later arrived at the scene and found Calhoun wounded in the street.
The suspect then engaged gunfire with said deputy before the deputy shot and took the suspect into custody.
Deputy Calhoun sustained life threatening injuries and rushed to a local area hospital where he later died.
"We are sadly in a time where there is a growing population that has absolutely zero respect for other people. They have zero respect for authority. They have zero respect for law enforcement. And nationwide, we are confronting these situations with armed individuals that, over what seemingly seem to be minor disagreements, are willing to engage law enforcement in life and death gun battles," Bianco said.
Officials said the suspect was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital where he is currently in critical condition.
However, an investigation is ongoing.
