Friends, family and colleagues mourn deceased CA deputy

JARUPA VALLEY, Calif. (NBC) - A makeshift memorial is bringing mourners together in Jarupa Valley to honor Officer Isaiah Cordero.

Cordero died of a gunshot wound Thursday afternoon during an attempted traffic stop.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said the department is "deeply heartbroken" over the loss.

According to reports, Deputy Cordero was approaching the vehicle belonging to 54-year-old William Shae McKay. McKay then pulled a gun out and shot Cordero.

McKay led authorities on a pursuit where a spike strip helped disable the vehicle, leading to a shootout where deputies returned fire and killed him.

Sheriff Bianco also said McKay had an extensive 22-year criminal history in the state of California.

Cordero's survived by his girlfriend, his parents, and his older stepbrother.
