California experiences 6.4 morning earthquake

EUREKA, Calif. (NBC) - A preliminary 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck early Tuesday near the northern California coast.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake was 22.7 miles southwest of the city of Eureka, and 15 miles from the city of Fortuna at a depth of 10 miles.

Following that were several aftershocks in the 2.6-to-3.9 range on the Richter scale.

While the National Weather Service did not issue a tsunami warning, no one sustained injuries.

However, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said the power is out across the county, with nearly 70,000 customers in the dark.

Also, the California Highway Patrol closed the Ferndale Bridge for possible structural damage.

It's not yet clear when the bridge might reopen.
