California Governor: Schools may re-open as soon as July

Newsom also suggests extended school year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - California Governor Gavin Newsom says the state's school children could be back in their classrooms as soon as July.

Gov. Newsom continued to outline his plans for slowly re-opening the state Tuesday by addressing the issue of education. The Governor says no official decisions have been made on re-opening schools. However, he did say an earlier school year may be needed to makeup for the loss of a large part of the spring semester.

“We have made no decisions definitively in that space, but I just want folks to know the concern around learning loss,” Newsom said. “Having talked to many other parents and educators, even the kids, I think we might want to consider getting that school year moved up a little bit.”

The Governor also pointed out some students and families have struggled to adapt to at-home learning.
