San Diego County considers re-opening beaches

Coronado mayor pushes for public access to parks

CORONADO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The mayor of Coronado wants San Diego County to re-open its beaches.

"I think the beach is certainly a public space that should be open, not today or tomorrow but it should be opened through a regional approach." said Mayor Richard Bailey.

State and local officials decided to close their beaches last month, saying visitors were not following social distancing guidelines. Now the county is forming a "re-opening plan."

Bailey said he, and many of his residents, want the beaches back.

"It's about a common sense application of public policies that treat the public with respect and like adults."

The mayor of San Diego is also considering re-open that city's beaches. Mayor Kevin Faulconer says he'll make a decision by the end of the week.
