Car flies off 16th Street ramp

Witnesses say car was speeding before bizarre crash

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A bizarre accident played out right before drivers' eyes on Yuma's 16th street Tuesday evening. They say they saw a car fly off 16th Street near the highway on-ramp.

Our crew arrived on scene just moments after the accident. They captured video of a blue compact car resting on its roof far beneath the bridge in a pit near the railroad tracks.

Yuma Police say the crash happened just before seven Tuesday evening at the intersection of 16th Street and Redondo Center Drive.

Witnesses tell us they believe the car was going at least 70-miles-an-hour in the moments before the crash. They say they saw the car barrel through the intersection, smash through the barrier, and vault off the bridge.

“He came speeding across that back street right there and all of a sudden I seen A blue car just go [sound effect]. He came speeding across me, in front of me. I called my fiancé and said I think I just seen somebody get killed in front of my face. I think somebody just died in front of my face." said Mr. Sutton, a driver who witnessed the crash while sitting at the red light at Redondo Center.

The driver wasn't killed. In fact, he got out of the car on his own. Paramedics did take him to the hospital for evaluation, but they say his injuries are not severe.

No word on if drugs or alcohol contributed to this crash.
