Chief Clem says CBP made over 20,000 July apprehensions in Yuma
CBP has not released official numbers for last month yet - FOX 9's Adam Klepp reports
YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - Thousands of migrants continue crossing the U.S. - Mexico border into Yuma when the sun goes down.
While CBP hasn’t released official numbers, according to Yuma Chief Patrol Officer Chris Clem Yuma agents made over 20,000 apprehensions last month.
While the groups usually follow orders and are peaceful, it takes agents hours to process them in the field.
Large groups from Venezuela gathered at the wall monday morning.
According to the United Nations there are over six million displaced venezuelans worldwide.
“I left venezuela because many people are dying of hunger. The president runs our country very badly,” Humberto said.
“I want to work, now that I am in the United States, thank god,” Juan Diaz said.
While the migrants get bussed nightly to Yuma Sector headquarters, some will take busses all the way to Washington D.C., or New York City.
As Arizona and Texas continue to send migrants to the east coast.
Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington D.C. and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have publicly stated the number of migrants coming are straining their local resources and non-profits.
Something Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is not sympathetic about.
“Mayor Adams, come to Yuma, Arizona, see what’s happening at our southern border,” Ducey said.
Yuma sector agents have made over 230,000 apprehensions this year.
Making Yuma the third busiest border sector behind only the Rio Grande valley and Del Rio, both in Texas.
