Dozens of Spirit airplanes parked on tarmac at Arizona airport

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (NBC, KYMA) - Dozens of Spirit Airlines planes are sitting idle on the tarmac at an Arizona airport.

The planes were seen over the weekend parked at Goodyear Airport, which is known to some as an "airplane graveyard," where retired or surplus aircraft are stored.

The plane sightings came the same weekend the discount airline abruptly ended service.

Spirit has been trying to emerge from its second bankruptcy in less than a year, but rising fuel costs only exacerbated the company's financial struggles.

Spirit had been seeking a $500 million bailout from the White House, but the talks failed in the final hours.
