Tribal community members gather to honor woman found dead in canal in Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (CNN, KYMA) - An Arizona community came together to honor the life of a 28-year-old Native American mother found dead last month.

Questions surround the death of Passion Schurz after she was found in a canal in Scottsdale. Police do not report signs of trauma, but the cause of death is pending.

On Saturday, tribal members traveled from around the state to be part of a funeral procession, saying the loss is deeply hurting their communities.

"This is not the first story. You can hear it across the nation at pretty much any reservation you go to. It's heartbreaking," said Brenda Ahl from Tucson.

Schurz was set to be laid to rest on tribal lands Sunday.

Her family is now trying to raise money for funeral expenses and to support her two young children.
