Suspect shot and killed, woman and child rescued by Phoenix police

PHOENIX (NBC, KYMA) - A suspect is dead and a woman and child were rescued over the weekend after a domestic violence situation turned into a shooting incident involving the Phoenix Police Department (PPD).

"Oh, it's scary," said Adriana Moreno, a neighbor.

A loud argument woke people living in a west Phoenix apartment complex, located in the area of 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road, early Sunday morning.

"I don't know what happened. I heard an argument, bad argument," Moreno shared.

PPD says officers responded to calls about the fight at around 6 a.m. They found a woman and her child locked inside a fenced-in yard.

"It was locked by a wrought iron gate. So, they didn't have a way to exit the backyard apartment," said Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez, Public Information Officer for PPD.

Officers broke the lock and freed the woman and who they believe to be her daughter.

"The urgency of that happening was the woman said the man that was inside the apartment had just cocked a gun," Sgt. Fernandez said.

The armed man allegedly didn't comply with officer commands to drop his weapon and come outside. Instead, he barricaded himself inside.

Officers evacuated neighboring apartments and used a drone to keep an eye on him. That's when they say the man shot down the drone and fired several rounds out of his window.

"First one, loud...The second lower. The three more lower. The fourth one. Done," Moreno further shared.

Police say officers fired their weapons back.

The man was later found dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside the apartment. No one else was injured in the shooting.

Detectives later confirmed the man and woman were in a relationship.

"I know the people. I know the guy, I know the lady. They're nice. You [do not] see the people danger," Moreno expressed.
