Police in Arizona rescue man swept away by fast-moving water

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (CBS, KYMA) - Police pulled off a hair-raising rescue after a man's car was swept away in Apache Junction, Arizona during wet weather Monday.

Officers from the Apache Junction Police Department (AJPD) received a call after a vehicle drifted into Weekes Wash "due to fast-moving water."

"Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle and made contact with the driver, a 59-year-old male from Chandler, AZ. Officers instructed the driver to remain inside the vehicle for his safety," the police department said.

"Utilizing a rope from a patrol vehicle, officers threw one end to the driver. After securing the rope, one of the officers entered the wash, reached the vehicle, and safely assisted the driver out. The officer and driver made their way back to the roadway, where they exited the water safely," AJPD added.

Footage shared to Facebook by AJPD includes the trapped driver's 911 call and bodycam footage of the successful rescue effort.

The National Weather Service had issued a flash flooding warning for the area following heavy rain.
