Massive dust storm in Arizona causes significant damage

PHOENIX (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A massive dust storm slammed parts of Arizona causing significant damage in some areas.

A towering wall of dust swallowed parts of Phoenix Monday evening, plunging the city into near-zero visibility.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned drivers of dangerously low visibility and urged people to "pull aside [and] stay alive."

The storm was quickly followed by severe thunderstorms that tore through the city, leaving behind downed trees, wind damage and widespread power outages.

In addition, the NWS issued both dust storm and severe thunderstorm warnings.

After the storm swept through, more than 60,000 customers in Arizona were left without power.
