Greer Fire burns over 3,500 acres, evacuations ordered

GREER, Ariz. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Multiple buildings have been destroyed and evacuations have been ordered as a wind-driven wildfire burns through an Apache County community.

The Greer Fire, according to Inciweb, started at around 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, has burned over 3,500 acres and is 0% contained.

It's moving through the unincorporated community of Greer and surrounding areas, leading to evacuations and area mayors issuing a Declaration of Emergency. Firefighters say the wildfire is moving northeast toward the community of South Fork.

Officials say all of Greer is in GO status to evacuate, including areas within a one-mile radius of North Woods Estates and South Fork, and areas west of Highway 261. In addition, residents from River Road in Eagar west to Highway 261 are now in SET mode and should prepare to evacuate.

In an update on Wednesday morning, Tiffany Davila with Arizona Forestry and Fire Management said crews experienced winds between 25-35 miles per hour while battling the intense flames.

Inciweb says, "A shelter is open in St. Johns at the County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds has the capacity to house small and large animals," as well as Highway 260 near Greer is closed in both directions.
