Phoenix man dies after being rescued from a palm tree

PHOENIX (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A tree trimmer in Phoenix has died after being rescued from a palm tree over the weekend.

It happened in the area of 67th Avenue and Thomas Road at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to officials, 43-year-old Jaime Yepiz was working as a tree trimmer and had climbed up the 50-foot-tall palm tree when part of the tree fell and hit him, knocking him unconscious. Two other employees were with him at the time.

Crews used an aerial ladder and platform to rescue Yepiz while a chainsaw was used to cut away some of the dried fonds on the palm.

The firefighters were finally able to get to Yepiz, who was near the trunk of the tree.

Yepiz was unconscious when he was pulled from the tree and was then taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition, but he later died.
