Smuggler in critical condition after attempting to run away from Border Patrol

TUCSON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A U.S. citizen is in critical condition after attempting to smuggle migrants and flee from U.S. Border Patrol agents, "resulting in a rollover crash near Sonoita, Arizona, Saturday," according to a press release.

The press release says, "Border Patrol detection technology observed a suspicious vehicle traveling northbound from the border near Parker Canyon Lake around 3 p.m."

After they received the information, the press release says the Sonoita Station agents spotted the vehicle, a white Nissan Rogue, on State Route 83.

However, the press release says the vehicle stopped and three people ran into the "surrounding high desert," and the Nissan Rogue continued traveling northbound, "racing past additional Sonoita Station agents parked farther along the highway."

This prompted the agents to activate their lights and sirens "in an attempt to conduct a vehicle stop," but the vehicle failed to yield, and the agents, according to the press release, chased the vehicle for about four miles before stopping after " they saw a large dust cloud at the corner of Route 83 and Cimmaron Road near Sonoita."

The press release says the agents found the Nissan Rogue "rolled onto its side and the driver unconscious outside it," prompting them to call for "emergency medical services and carefully moved the driver a safe distance from the Rogue in case it caught fire."

The driver, due to suffering critical injuries, was taken, via a "life flight," to the hospital for medical care while two Guatemalans and a Mexican citizen were arrested during the incident after they were found be "illegally present in the country," according to the press release.

While they will face charges for "illegal reentry into the United States," the driver will face charges for migrant smuggling, the press release says.
