Phoenix PD launches internal investigaton after deadly bar fight

PHOENIX (KYMA, KECY/NBC) - The death of a man following a confrontation outside a bar in Downtown Phoenix has prompted the Phoenix Police Department (PPD) to launch an internal investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.

According to an NBC affiliate in the Phoenix area, two off-duty officers were working security at a bar just south of Central Avenue and Roosevelt Street when a fight broke out in front of the bar in the early morning hours of March 16.

PPD says those officers tried to break up the fight, but not before 22-year-old Rafael Montoya was reportedly knocked unconscious on the ground.

Montoya was taken to the hospital with severe head trauma, but he died three days later.
