Inmate in Tucson dies from self-harm in prison

TUCSON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - An inmate died from an apparent act of self-harm by hanging, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry (ADCRR).

Inmate Gabriel Vavages, a 34-year-old man died on Sunday, July 30.

ADCRR said prison staff found Vavages unresponsive and conducted life-saving measures until paramedics from the Tucson Fire Department arrived.

The Tucson Fire Department pronounced Vavages dead.

The 34-year-old inmate was sentenced out of Pima County for attempted third-degree burglary and attempted aggravated assault.

Vavages' assigned housing location was at Arizona State Prison Complex-Tucson.

ADCRR said all inmate deaths are investigated in consultation with the county medical examiner's office.
