Fmr. Congresswoman Giffords releases statement on Tucson shooting 12 years later

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords released a statement following the 12th anniversary of the Tucson shooting.

During a "Congress on Your Corner" event, a gunman shot Giffords and 18 others at a Tucson Safeway store. As a result, six people had died while 12 others sustained injuries, including Giffords.

“In the weeks and months after, I relearned how to walk and talk," Giffords said in her statement.

However, as Giffords was recovering, and as a response to the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, she created a non-profit known as Giffords. As of Sunday, the non-profit will be celebrating 10 years.

“Over the past decade, we've built a movement more powerful than the gun lobby and changed the conversation around gun safety. Just like my recovery, progress happens step by step. It starts with hope, and then the courage to act on that hope. Together, we can create a future free from gun violence," Giffords continued in her statement.
