State nears 7,000 confirmed cases with almost 300 deaths

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona health officials announced 18 new deaths from coronavirus Tuesday, as well as a surge in new cases.

The news comes just one day after health officials reported their first day with no deaths since March.

Nearly 7,000 Arizonans have now contracted the illness. Coronavirus is blamed for 293 deaths across the state, including one person in Yuma County.

Meanwhile, more than 52,000 more people applied for unemployment benefits last week. More than 470,000 Arizonans have filed jobless claims in the past six weeks.

Governor Doug Ducey's stay-at-home or is set to expire on Thursday. No word yet on if Ducey plans to extend the order, or re-open the state for business.
