Extremist was released from New Zealand jail despite fears

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Court documents have identified 32-year-old Ahamed Samsudeen as the extremist who was shot and killed by police after he attacked people in an Auckland supermarket with a knife, injuring seven. New Zealand authorities have said he was inspired by the Islamic State group. He was imprisoned in New Zealand for three years after being caught with a hunting knife and extremist videos. But at a certain point, despite grave fears he would attack others, authorities said they could do nothing more to keep him behind bars. Their fears were borne out when Samsudeen grabbed a kitchen knife from a supermarket shelf and stabbed five people in Auckland on Friday.
