YFD to host 9/11 Stair Climb

Reporter Lauren Duffel spoke with the fire captain and shares exactly how they will remember the lives lost that day.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Yuma Fire Department (YFD) is hosting a stair climb Friday to honor the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

More than 2,000 people died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a day that changed America forever.

Twenty-five years later, YFD is honoring the victims and first responders who sacrificed their lives to save others.

This is a free community event that everyone is welcome to attend Friday morning, with the first climb taking place at 6 a.m. while the second climb of the day will take place at 6:30 a.m.

Participants will walk 19 laps up and down the stairs at the PMG Building on 16th Street and Fourth Avenue, equaling the 110 floors of the Twin Towers.

"It gives us a time to come together as a community and to walk a little bit of the steps of what it might have been like that day," said Fire Capt. Aaron Wonders with YFD.

Capt. Wonders said this event is a great way to honor the brave men and women who risked their lives to save others 25 years ago.

"It's very important for us to pay honor and respect to what happened that day, to the civilian lives that were lost, and to all of the first responders who fell," Wonders shared. "There were 343 firefighters who fell that day."
