Buffalo Zoo adds endangered baby Addax to exhibit

BUFFALO, N.Y. (NBC, KYMA) - A critically endangered Addax calf was born on July 4 and is getting ready to meet visitors.

Those tiny horns are getting ready to make their big debut at the Buffalo Zoo. The calf was born to parents Patricia and Dune.

Zookeepers say it is healthy, active, and spending plenty of time exploring its habitat while staying close to Mom. The baby does not have a name or confirmed gender yet.

This birth marks the twenty fifth Addax born at the buffalo zoo since 1991.

Addax are a type of antelope known for the white x-shaped" markings on their faces.

Buffalo zoo president and CEO Lisa Smith says the birth is another step in the zoo's conservation efforts.

Visitors can see the new calf at the Addax habitat most mornings starting Wednesday.
