FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Final day of extreme heat warning

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - We've made it folks. We've reached the final day of this long stretch in an extreme heat warning, and it was a great warm-up (wink, wink) to what we'll be experiencing later this season.

Today will reach 101°F in Yuma and 102°F in El Centro, once again beating the previous daily record set in 2004 for each city (98°F in Yuma and 96°F in El Centro). This now marks five days in a row in which both cities have beaten the previous daily record.

With that being said, it is highly recommended to avoid the outdoors during the afternoon unless necessary. If possible, reschedule any activities that will take place outside for a prolonged period of time.

Try to keep water with you at all times and stay hydrated throughout the day. Dress in lightweight and loose-fitting clothes to allow for more air circulation and quicker evaporation of sweat.

Make sure to keep an eye out for early signs and symptoms of heat-related illness. These can include thirst and muscle cramps.

Heat exhaustion may include cool, moist, pale skin; headache; dizziness; weakness or exhaustion; or nausea.

More serious conditions include vomiting, having a throbbing headache, confusion, decreased alertness or loss of consciousness.

There should be a couple of days of double-digit heat to start the work week, but we will consequently be in the triple digits again by the time Wednesday hits.

Winds won't play much of a factor in today's weather pattern but will have a quick pickup into the mid-to-high teens across the Desert Southwest on Monday.
