FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Extreme heat drags into weekend

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - If you have thoughts of heading outdoors to enjoy your weekend, today and Sunday are not the ideal tandem to do so. Our region's extreme heat warning is in full effect through Sunday night.

Today should be the final day of our top temperatures for the stretch of the extreme heat warning. This includes max temps of 107°F in both Yuma and El Centro. Once again, these will both blow by the daily records for the cities set back in 2004 when Yuma reached 102°F and El Centro hit 100°F.

In wake of the extreme heat warning, it is highly recommended to avoid the outdoors during the afternoon unless necessary. If possible, reschedule any activities that will take place outside for a prolonged period of time.

Try to keep water with you at all times and stay hydrated throughout the day. Dress in lightweight and loose-fitting clothes to allow for more air circulation and quicker evaporation of sweat.
Make sure to keep an eye out for early signs and symptoms of heat-related illness. These can include thirst and muscle cramps.

Heat exhaustion may include cool, moist, pale skin; headache; dizziness; weakness or exhaustion; or nausea.

More serious conditions include vomiting, having a throbbing headache, confusion, decreased alertness or loss of consciousness.

Unfortunately, after lighter winds the past several days, they are expected to pick up this afternoon and into the evening. El Centro and Imperial will experience 20+mph wind gusts this afternoon before they make their way into Yuma for a brief stint in the early evening. As we are currently tracking, these conditions are not going to be as intense on Sunday, but will still be noticeable in our weather pattern.

Tomorrow will come with a little bit of relief but will still most likely remain in the triple-digits.
