FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Extreme heat warning takes effect through Sunday

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - As of 11 a.m. Thursday, an extreme heat warning is in effect and will last through Sunday evening. Throughout this time frame, we are tracking afternoon temperatures in the 97-108°F range.

For Thursday, we are expected to reach 106°F in Yuma and El Centro. Peak temperatures will kick in around 3 p.m.

It is highly recommended to avoid the outdoors during the afternoon unless necessary. If possible, reschedule any activities that will take place outside for a prolonged period of time.

Try to keep water with you at all times and stay hydrated throughout the day. Dress in lightweight and loose-fitting clothes to allow for more air circulation and quicker evaporation of sweat.

Make sure to keep an eye out for early signs and symptoms of heat-related illness. These can include thirst and muscle cramps.

Heat exhaustion may include cool, moist, pale skin; headache; dizziness; weakness or exhaustion; or nausea.

More serious conditions include vomiting, having a throbbing headache, confusion, decreased alertness or loss of consciousness.

Don't forget about your furry friends either! Make sure your pets are indoors and have access to plenty drinking water, as well.

Temperatures will not be at moderate conditions until around 10 p.m. when we reach the low 80s. For the overnight lows, El Centro will stick around 70°F.

Yuma will be a little cooler, dropping to 67°F, and continuing to move east down Interstate-8, Wellton will be around 62°F.

Outside of the unseasonable heat, winds won't play a big factor in the weather Thursday and the skies will be clear heading into Friday.
