Los Angeles residents hold watch party for Bad Bunny’s halftime show
LOS ANGELES (NBC, KYMA) - A historic night at the Super Bowl. Global superstar Bad Bunny performed on the halftime stage.
Across Southern California, watch parties focused on the "Benito Bowl" on "Bad Bunny Day" as declared by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
Starting with sugar cane fields to represent the work of farmers, he moved through sets that took us to New York and the corner store, or bodega, the reggaeton artist sang his song "Nueva Yol," which is about the migrant experience.
He also brought his signature "Casita" from an historic Puerto Rico residency to the halftime show. Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba, Cardi B and Karol G among the celebrities dancing inside.
High tide in Downtown Los Angeles hosted the "Benito Bowl" for Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio.
"He represents our culture our Latino culture so well especially in a time like this," said Vic Ramos Jr., a chef and co-creator of Capicua LA.
Bad Bunny has been vocal against the U.S. administration for various policies, including immigration enforcement.
Power poles were used to demonstrate the electrical outages that continue to happen in Puerto Rico and his criticism of the government response post-Hurricane Maria.
"For me, it was breathtaking. Benito represented us, the island, the perfect way," said Ana Sofia Marti Pineda, a fan.
Together, people watched as this couple got married for real, and Lady Gaga sang one of her songs "salsa style."
Fellow Puerto Rican Ricky Martin performed Bad Bunny's song about Hawaii from the album "Debi Tirar Mas Fotos," which recently made history winning a Grammy for Album of the Year, the first all Spanish album to receive that honor.
On the halftime stage, Bad Bunny handed what appears to be a Grammy to a young boy from Costa Mesa.
As Bad Bunny departs, he dictated a list of countries from the Americas, with their flags on display, walking out with musicians playing traditional Puerto Rican instruments, a final message of unity and his belief that love conquers all.
The football he spiked at the end said, "Together, we are America" and then in Spanish says "Seguimos aqui," which means, "We are still here."
