Overcast conditions finally clear the skies

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Rain made another appearance in Yuma today as overcast skies continued a pattern the Desert Southwest has been experiencing for much of the past few weeks. A brief round of rain moved through the area this afternoon, with clouds lingering over the city for most of the day.

For some people in the city, the lack of sunshine has been frustrating. Winter visitor Mike Beard said the cloudy skies have limited what he’s been able to enjoy outdoors.

“I would like to see the sun,” Beard said. “Heard the jets practicing this morning in the military, but you couldn’t see them, probably because they were above the clouds.”

Others are embracing the change in weather while it lasts. Local resident Robert Aguirre said the cooler, cloudier conditions offer a welcome break from Yuma’s typically intense sunshine.

“We get too much sunshine. I have a daughter in Vancouver, Washington who says, ‘oh, I wish we had sun over there,’ and I tell her, ‘We have too much sun here. Send me a trash can so I can throw it away,’” he joked.

Temperatures also dipped today and are expected to remain below average for the next few days. The cooler air has affected outdoor plans for some, including Beard.

“Wish it was warmer so I could spend more time at the pool,” he said.

Aguirre, however, said the cooler temperatures are something to appreciate.

“It’s wonderful because you tend to forget how hot it gets here, so enjoy it while you can,” he said.

Temperatures are expected to begin to rise again toward the end of the weekend and into next week, and updates will continue as conditions change.
