NBC News poll provides insight on who Americans blame for government shutdown
(NBC, KYMA) - A new NBC News poll is providing insight on who Americans blame for the government shutdown and who they trust most to handle the economy.
25% of the adults surveyed said Republicans are to blame for the stalemate, 42% said Democrats, and 24% named President Donald Trump himself. However, 3% volunteered a fourth option, blaming both President Trump and the GOP.
When combined, those on the right are collectively deemed most at fault with 52%, with those on the left not far behind at 42%.
Trump's approval rating stands at 43%, with 55% disapproving of his job performance. His approval is four points lower than our last poll in march.
The responses show it may have a lot to do with the economy.
63%said the president has fallen short when it comes to his handling of the economy. 34% said he lives up to expectations, with 2% saying it's some of both.
Those surveyed were split on which party would do better in dealing with the economy, just a one-point difference at 38% for Republicans to 37% for Democrats. That's the highest number Democrats have gotten since 2008.
9% said the parties would do about the same while 16% said neither party would do well.
But when it comes to dealing with border security, republicans are the dominant favorite at 53%. Democrats got 22% with 15% saying neither party would deal with the border wall.
